Dylan covers: Si Tu Dois Partir

Fairport Convention : Si Tu Dois Partir

Or: If You Gotta Go, Go Now.

The story goes that British folkers Fairport Convention were playing a gig at the Middle Earth club and thought it would be amusing to do Dylan's song in French cajun style, so the band called for volunteers from the audience to help with the translation. Said Fairport guitarist Richard Thompson: ´About three people turned up, so it was really written by committee, and consequently ended up not very cajun, French or Dylan.´

It sure is a fun version though. Sandy Denny´s accent is really endearing, but Dave Swarbrick´s fiddle steals the show. ´Mais si tu dois partir, va-t'en, si non, tu dois rester la nuit...´ And by the way: the short percussion break towards the end of the song is the sound of a pile of chairs falling over, with a bottle breaking in the process.
