The Cult: Black Angel
[purchase]
Before The Cult became intimate with their inner-head-banger, they were more of a psychedelic goth band.
Black Angel, the last track on their second release, Love, is about a fugitive from the law who is headed home after many years of exile. He knows that he will be put to death when he returns, but he returns anyway. The chorus paints the picture of the man traveling with a Black Angel, the angel of death, at his side.
It's a long way to go, a Black Angel at your side.
I know this song isn't really about the devil himself, but the angel of death is pretty freaky too so I figure it counts.
(PS: Last year while the world was enthralled with American Idol, I made a playlist in iTunes called "The Real American Idols". Basically it was one track from each of my favorite vocalists ever [whether or not they were American]. Ian Astbury of The Cult was right up there. If you're not familiar with him as a vocalist, you should be. He has pipes, man.)
